Sea Girt Lighthouse
The last live lighthouse built on the Atlantic Coast, the Sea Girt lighthouse was commissioned and began operation in 1896. Originally called the Squan Inlet Lighthouse, the name was changed in 1897.
Illumination was provided by a 4th order Fresnel lens, and could be seen 15 miles at sea.
During World War II the lighthouse became a Coast Guard patrol station. Over time the lighthouse fell into disrepair, but was rescued by a local group. Today, the lighthouse is supported by volunteers and donations. The lighthouse is open for tours on the first Sunday of each month from April to October. Other times by appointment.
